A human-centered approach to EHRs

Background

UpLift matches clients with in-network therapists and psychiatrists and allows providers to focus on delivering quality care without the distraction and overhead of running a private practice—billing, marketing, credentialing, eligibility.

When we started UpLift, we never imagined building an electronic health record (EHR). After all, there were already plenty of options on the market. ….or so we thought.

As UpLift began to sign more and more providers and expand from individual psychotherapy to couples therapy and psychiatry, we hit a road block.

What wasn’t working…

A record for every patient and provider pairing (rather than a single record) interfered with our clinicians, ability to collaborate. And the lack of documentation on the platform created additional overhead for our clinical operations and billing departments.

UpLift needed an EHR—the ability to securely store and efficiently access patient records, while encouraging quality, evidenced-based care.

To build or to buy?

We explored buying and integrating with an existing EHR, but ultimately found the options to either be bloated (especially for a mental health-only practice), expensive, or difficult to use—sometimes all three!

UpLift was known amongst providers for being simple and easy to use. If we wanted to maintain that reputation, as well as advance other internal initiatives, like streamlined revenue cycle management and quality care programs, we needed to build a custom EHR.

But where to start…

Solution: A single patient record

Every UpLift patient now had a single record that was shared amongst providers, allowing psychiatrists and therapists to work together to improve patient outcomes.

Providers could review or add new activities to the patient record.

Tracking progress

Visualizations of assessments along the sides of the chart made it easy for providers to conceptualize progress.

Diving into the details

Entering “chart review” mode allowed providers or the clincial team to review detailed notes.

The reviews are in

“At UpLift, our EHR isn't just a digital record – it's a seamless extension of our commitment to both our therapists and the individuals they serve. Having spent years in behavior health, I've seen many platforms, and this one's intuitive design is genuinely remarkable. The design eliminates administrative friction so our clinicians can focus on what truly matters: providing high-quality, impactful care. This technology empowers them to connect, document, and collaborate effortlessly, ultimately leading to better outcomes for everyone."
